Just saw an interesting documentary abot Wal-Mart on encore channel 158. Your basic "big business" story of how they try to "muscle" their way into communities by getting tax breaks and incentives from local municipalities to come into their communities. Then, when those incentives are set to expire, they move on and close the stores down or get the local governments to extend their incentives further. It kinda makes one wonder about the stores in our area. How much of an incentive did they get from the town of Norton, Wise, or even the county to build the new store and when can these towns expect to start seeing tax revenues from them.

I saw that show this evening as well. The part that got me was the condition of their "factories" (more like sweat shops) overseas. One girl said that she had to work an ungodly amount of hours per week just to equal out to three dollars a day. Then the factory workers were coached how to lie when Wal Mart representatives showed up for an inspection. They were forced to live in a dormatory and what was worse, pay rent and utilities for it! But as the girl stated, if they moved out, they still had to pay the rent. There were a lot more subjects that made the high brass of Wal Mart and the Walton family look like Satan's legion. It's a shame that there isn't any competition for Devil Mart in small towns like this.

Yep, that's it. Kinda makes me wanna quit shopping there. Ya'll see the part where the state of North Carolina successfully sued them for contaminating the Catawba River with the way they displayed their fertilizers in the parking lot over the storm drains?

That is what we traded the local hardwares for.
